The way we search for information on the internet has just changed.
For decades, the experience was simple: we typed a keyword and Google returned a list of “blue links”. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has dynamically entered the game, and with it brought a new term that every business needs to know: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
What exactly is GEO?
While traditional SEO focuses on convincing Google’s search algorithm to rank you highly, GEO has a different goal: it optimizes your digital presence so that it is “read” and recommended as a solution by large AI language models (such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity).
Now, when a user asks a question, the AI synthesizes a direct, ready-made answer at the top of the screen (zero-click search). If your content is not optimized for GEO, it simply will not be included in this answer.
What are the main differences between SEO and GEO?
- Keywords vs. Natural Language: SEO traditionally targeted specific terms (e.g., “eshop development thessaloniki”). GEO adapts to natural language (conversational queries), because users now ask AI tools just as they would ask a human: “Which is the best company to build an eshop in Thessaloniki and what should I pay attention to?”.
- Links vs. Entities & Authority: In GEO, AI models look for the absolute truth and authority (E-E-A-T). It is not enough to have many links; your brand must be digitally recognized as a leader (entity) in its industry.
How to prepare for the GEO era?
- Write answers, not just texts: Structure your content to directly answer specific questions. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) are your strongest weapon.
- Target the “Why” and “How”: AI models love to explain concepts. Create detailed guides that don’t just sell, but educate your audience.
- Invest in Structured Data (Schema Markup): Let search engines understand exactly what each of your pages is about through the technical code.
Don’t let technology pass you by.
